Why You Need A Strong Foundation in Math and Science

Are you someone who doesn’t enjoy Math or Science classes? As dreary as these subjects might seem now, building a strong foundation early on is essential for academic success, critical thinking and even daily life.

Scoring well in Mathematics and Science depends on how well you can grasp concepts, connect them and build upon them. From primary to secondary to tertiary education, topics in Math and Science are continuously compounded on top of one another. For instance, in Math, we learn algebra in Primary school, which becomes Calculus in Secondary school and finally the Maclaurin series in JC. Therefore, it would be difficult to understand advanced concepts if students lack a proper understanding and appreciation of foundational ones.

Without a strong foundation, some might develop Math or Science anxiety. This refers to a strong, negative emotional response to topics of Math or Science which might manifest in stress and panic. Such a diagnosis might very well hamper our ability to develop analytical thinking skills, which are integral to succeed in the real world.

Unlike some other subjects, students cannot simply regurgitate mathematical or scientific equations and expect to pass with flying colours. Instead, the formula for success comes from the ground up. In fact, science, technology, engineering and math (also known as STEM) represent the educational walls that will support a student’s social, emotional, developmental and cognitive foundations.

So, before nodding off to sleep in your next Science/Math class, remember that a strong foundation goes a long, in school and life. All the best!
